چکیده

Different fungi are discussed to play a certain role in recent spruce decline in addition to different abiotic factors such as S 0 2, photooxidants (ozone) or unfavourable climatic conditions. Thus, ergosterol as a specific fungal sterol was used as a biochemical indicator for fungal infection in differently damaged spruce and fir needles. With its aid it could be demonstrated that the important needle pathogens Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii Bubak, Lophoderm ium piceae and Sirococcus Type II contain unsaponified ergosterol comparable with the ergosterol content o f different edible mushrooms. Furthermore it could be shown that all necrotic and also certain bleached and green needles exhibit fungal infection. H owever, fungal invasion seem s to be a secondary reaction after the needle is predamaged by different factors.

Nutrient Dynamics and Decomposition rate of Norway Spruce Needles in Stråsan and Lajim stands

Climate changes due to changes in a habitat leads to differences in the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of leaflitters, which has many effects on the controlling factors of the decomposition process. In the present study, the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of Norway spruce was evaluated for 363 days in the two forestation sites in the natural and foreign habitats, ...

Assessment of Swiss Needle Cast Disease: Temporal and Spatial Investigations of Fungal Colonization and Symptom Severity

Increasing severity of Swiss needle cast (SNC), a foliar disease of Douglas-fir caused by the fungus Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii, has become a matter of concern in forest plantations throughout coastal Oregon and Washington. This study monitored SNC disease in three Oregon Douglas-fir plantations bi-annually in 1998–1999, and compared differences in fungal colonization and symptom development in ...

Alteration in haemato-biochemical profiles of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss affected by Saprolegnia spp- A potential constraint for culture of trout in Kashmir Himalaya

Haemato-biochemical studies in rainbow trout infected with Saprolegnia were carried out under temperate climatic conditions of Kashmir valley to find out the variation in blood parameters. The trial was carried out on 405 cultured rainbow trout fish ranging in length from 47.8 to 69.8 cm and in weight from 1300 to 1920 g. The same experiment was carried out on 2,70000.00 trout fish eggs from No...

Comparison of Biochemical, Molecular, and Visual Methods to Quantify Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii in Douglas-Fir Foliage.

ABSTRACT A recent epidemic of Swiss needle cast along the Oregon coast has prompted efforts to quantify foliar infection and colonization of the causal agent Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii. In this paper, we compare four methods to quantify colonization of Douglas-fir foliage by P. gaeumannii: fruiting body abundance, ergosterol content, dot blot analysis, and TaqMan based real-time quantitative pol...

Phylogenetic Distribution of Fungal Sterols

BACKGROUND Ergosterol has been considered the "fungal sterol" for almost 125 years; however, additional sterol data superimposed on a recent molecular phylogeny of kingdom Fungi reveals a different and more complex situation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The interpretation of sterol distribution data in a modern phylogenetic context indicates that there is a clear trend from cholesterol and...
